Fic: ‘A Jedi’s duty he feels.’
Title: A Jedi’s duty he feels.
Fandom: Star Wars
Rating: (G)
Time Period: Between tPM and AotC.
Summary: The question he left unanswered.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

I couldn’t help but wonder.

As it’s been a while, the characterisation of the characters below might feel ‘off’.

The youngling’s question echoes in the empty air.

Did you not feel love, Master Yoda?

A question spoken from the innocence of the young.

He had felt the expectant glances more keenly than a lightsabre slicing through flesh and he had reminded them they were at their lessons; disappointment had reigned in the classroom until he had directed their attention back to the Force. But the question had stayed in the back of his mind, waiting for a moment such as this when there was quiet stillness within his thoughts.

He sits in the Council chamber and he watches the Coruscanti traffic zooming past in its orderly lines despite the chaos of feeling he can feel through the morass of machinery. Footsteps are heard entering; he knows who approaches.

“I thought I would find you in here.” The other Jedi sits, stretching his legs before him. “I’d not seen you at dinner.”

“Taken my dinner would have been,” he replies. “Not edible the droids say.”

The taller Jedi quietly chuckles. “I don’t know who finds your food edible.”

Green eyes narrow and rest on the other. “My food you mock, hm?”

“No, no.” Intertwined fingers rest on his lap. “I heard about the question you were asked today. The younglings are buzzing about it. They think,” he watches the traffic, “you do not feel love.”

“Remind them I shall that only peace there is.”

“It is the duty of a Jedi to explore their feelings. Did you not do so when you were young?”

“Younglings they are. Jedi they are not.”

“There is no ignorance. There is knowledge.”

“Know the Jedi Code I do.”

They sit in comfortable silence, watching night descend. Lights flicker and flare before them. “You’ve not followed that duty?”

“Once I did.”

“Then answering the youngling’s question will not be a problem.”

He feels the other’s departure; his footsteps echo in the dark room. Reflections chase each other across the floor and he leans back in the chair.

He remembers the young female of his species whom he once met in his youth, many hundreds of years ago. She had accepted he was Jedi. She had not pushed him with questions as to why he did not allow himself to feel. She had simply accepted.

His own heart had betrayed him; he had considered staying with her, leaving the Order he had only known in his life. He had asked his Master what he should do and he had been told that it was dangerous, his emotion could lead him to the Dark Side if not fully explored, understood and accepted; only then could he deal with it and accept peace. On the final night of their mission, she had given him his first kiss – a light brushing of lips against his cheek – and they had spoken together with few words; in the morning, she had disappeared and he had left with his Master.

His fingers flex and he stands. In the morning, he will answer the youngling and remind him of the duty of a Jedi to explore their emotions so they can be dealt with and peace achieved.

His gaze strays to the window overlooking the traffic and a breath escapes him. “Emotion there is not,” he murmurs. “Peace there is.”

Then he turns and is lost within the light of the corridor directly outside.

Thank you! It's an idea that's been kicking around for a while and I wasn't sure it'd work.

Thank you; he was young once upon a time.

That is lovely! It's nice to think Yoda had once experienced such things. At least once.

That is lovely!
Thank you!

It's nice to think Yoda had once experienced such things. At least once.
It's nice to think he was young once and faced the same temptations as younger Jedi.
