Fic: ‘Her moment.’
Title: Her moment.
Fandom: Doctor Who.
Rating: (G)
Time Period: During The Girl Who Waited, season 6.
Summary: It’s older!Amy’s moment to kick and scream.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

SPOILERS if you’ve not seen the episode The Girl Who Waited; I wrote the moment she realises the Doctor lied. This moment sparked a scene that has quietly stayed with me since I saw the episode.

And I think I can see a pattern.

In the doorway, she stills, sword in air. Rory carries her younger self away and she can do nothing but stand, watching him as he runs with (younger) her to the TARDIS.

Rory, she understands, has made his choice although she knows he’d come back for her, that he’d let her in the TARDIS, that he doesn’t know the choice he made. She knows, even as he does not, even as he kicks open the TARDIS’ door.

Then the Doctor’s at the door, watching her with eyes too old, too knowing. In that moment, she drops her weapons and runs; she can see in his eyes a truth she’d forgotten.

She’s not going to let it happen. She’ll run as she hasn’t in thirty six years; she’s dodged and weaved and ducked and spun but not run. She’ll beat that closing door. She’ll make it on board the TARDIS.

She doesn’t want to die.

Her hands slam against the closed door; she is too late by the fraction of a second. She remembers the forgotten truth. Rule number one: the Doctor lies.

She beats against the door. “Doctor!”

She won’t let him get away with it. Not this time.

Her hand never stops. “Doctor!”

This is her moment to kick and scream.

“Doctor, let me in.”

All that time in waiting, and her faith for the Doctor made her so bitter.

I love the Doctor, but he let Amy down. Not in the little ways, but in the big ways, where it matters. It's not Amy's faith in the Doctor that makes her bitter. It's the fact that he's as fallible as the rest of us, and he makes mistakes. The mistakes he makes with Amy are just the bigger ones than most of us make with the people we love.`

Not that I don't love Emilie Autumn (and that song in particular!), but the Lady of Shalott was originally a Victorian poem by Tennyson. If you're curious, the full text of the poem is here.

Thank you for reading! I was very nervous about having written this story and this comment allayed my nervousness.

You have a talent for writing like this, in a reflective way, so don't be nervous :)
Thank you for such kind words, and I'll try. =D

Beautiful but so sad. That scene was played out wonderfully and you can see all the emotions and truth in the Doctors eyes just for a split second.

Thank you.

You could see all that in his eyes which just added to scene, for me.

See it's the moments after this that really break my heart. The moment Amy realises that the Doctor actually made the right choice. The joy of Amy is that she's smarter than any companion, in her way, ever. The only ones that even comes close are Leela and Sarah-Jane. And possibly Jamie and Ace; but theirs is a different kind of intelligence again.

So Amy is one of your favourite companions?
Armchair DM: Igor: Joy! Joy! Joy! Joy!armchairdm on September 22nd, 2011 01:52 pm (UTC)
One of them, yes. She's in my top 5; the only modern companion to make it. Though Rory is very close as well.

Though Rory is very close as well.
If Rory wasn't there, I'd be disappointed.

Not quite in my top 5; but very close.

This was possibly the saddest fic after the saddest episode in the modern series :( Great perspective though!

I'm sorry it's sad but thank you.
