Fic: ‘A bright future, indeed.’
Title: A bright future, indeed.
Fandom: Chronicles of Narnia (movie)
Rating: (G)
Time Period: During events in the Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe; before they returned to this world.
Summary: Would she be the Queen they expected?

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

Who could sit on a throne and not be nervous?

Don’t answer that question; I know some answers to it!

But, I couldn’t imagine any of the Pevensie children being able to sit on those thrones before their first day of Court without an attack of nerves. And Lucy’s reaction was the first I could imagine! And Mr Tumnus came to the rescue.

And the mention of the Beavers? That came because I’m missing them.

Lucy breathed deeply.

And released the breath slowly.

Reaching up, she straightened the crown resting atop her hair and placed her hands on the arms of the throne.

“I can do this,” she murmured under her breath.

Her words gently echoed around the empty hall. She imagined it filled with Fauns and centaurs and dwarves. Badgers and beavers and foxes. A dryad or two, if they could leave their trees for as long as the Court would take. There were arguments to settle, permission to be given and diplomats to entertain. Proclamations to announce and laws to pass.

What, the thought suddenly occurred, if they didn’t do it right? Any of it? The peoples of Narnia had waited so long and what if giants attended? Would there be room? And was she to just there and let Peter, as High King, do all the talking? What if someone begged an audience? What ...

She forced herself to breathe once more. Her shoulders bowed. There was so much to know and did they know any of it? Well, she supposed, Susan might know. She’d read all those books after all!

But what if they couldn’t do it? What if she couldn’t do it? She didn’t know how to be Queen! Edmund and Peter didn’t know how to be Kings! She wasn’t certain about Susan; there’d been all those books!

“You—Lucy Pevensie.”

“... yes?” She asked, nerves jangling.

“What,” Mr Tumnus entered the hall behind her, “are you doing here?”

“Mr Tumnus,” she blustered, “what if I cannot be Queen?” She turned in her throne, almost falling off the arm, her knees on the cushioned seat. “I don’t know what I’m doing!”

He smiled, placing his hands on her shoulders once he was close enough and leaned close. “My dear friend,” he softly began, “you are a Queen of Narnia.” He smiled and guided her back into the throne, crouching before her so their eyes would meet. “Aslan trusts you. Narnia trusts you. It trusts you all.

“How can you not be the Queen we know you can be?”

“... but!”

“There is no question about this, Lucy Pevensie. I can see your heart. I know it. Who else but someone like you, as well as your brothers and sister, could be our Queen?”

He smiled calmly and the quiet, calm warmth of his words wrapping Lucy in a blanket. “Are you sure?”

“I am very certain,” he stated confidently. “Narnia, now, has a very golden future thanks to you, your brothers and sister. Think,” he reached to straighten her askew crown (it’d fallen by her ear when she’d knelt on the throne), “no more of this matter. We have to help Mrs Beaver in the kitchen before Mr Beaver hides in a corner of Cair Paravel!”

Her eyes widened and she slid from the throne. Tomorrow could wait; Mr Beaver needed saving now! “We should hurry!”

Mr Tumnus watched as she ran while he stood. Narnia’s future was bright, indeed.

I love this. It would have been so nerve wracking for 4 children to suddenly be elevated to rulers of this land.

I love that Tumnus comes to her rescue ♥

I agree! And they're to be the rulers of a land filled with the above mentioned subjects; who knows how it will be, the day before they begin!

I love that Tumnus comes to her rescue ♥
Originally I'd written this scene with Mrs Beaver in the role Mr Tumnus takes in this. However, she didn't quite fit and Mr Tumnus did!

Really awesome. Poor Lucy; the nerves for her would be worse than a royal from our world because she wasn't born to it.

She was also from another world ...
