Her heart leapt into her throat at the sight of the transmission R2 forwarded to Coruscant.

I ... failed you, m’lady

She would not fail him.

She heard the orders given Anakin and the moment the transmission was ended, she faced Anakin. “We’re going to Geonosis,” she informed him calmly; no one would be able to accuse her of a rash decision later. “We’ll get there before they will. It makes sense.”

“We’re to stay where we are.” But she could tell he wanted to go.

“Your mandate is to protect me, am I correct?”

He nodded.

“Then you go where I go. And I’m going to Geonosis.”

They kissed and he saw them, between the guards and the creatures brought into the arena. In that moment, his heart crumbled, broken first into small pieces that, once crumbled, are ashes in his mouth.

He didn’t see who initiated that kiss but does it matter?

“Some rescue.”

Anakin shrugged, concentrated on the guards.

In the ensuing chaos, he cannot help the twinge in his chest where his heart should be when the nexu’s claws raked her back. He steeled himself when she fell from the transport in pursuit of Count Dooku.

“We cannot go back!” He yelled at Anakin above the engines that whined as they were pushed to their maximum limits.

“We can’t leave her there!”

“Have you forgotten your oath to the Jedi Order?”

“We have to go back!”

“You’ll be kicked out if you fail in your duty!”

In those words, he heard the many others who had said those very words and reminded himself of his duty.

The ashes tasted stronger in his mouth.

She cannot hide her concern when at the Jedi Temple; however, it can be hidden as concern for Anakin who lost his hand on Geonosis. At the doors to the Healing Halls, she is met by the one she truly wanted to see and is taken to a small adjoining room.

“You cannot see him. He is resting at the order of the healers.”

“It’s not him I wanted to see. Why are you avoiding me?”

His gaze met hers. “Does this look as though I am avoiding you?”

“Not physically, no.”

With the discreet wave of a hand, he closed the door. “Would this suit you better, m’lady?”

She flinched. “I came to see you, not Anakin.” She steeled her gaze; her chin rose in unconscious defiance. “I did no wrong.”

He swallowed quietly, his gaze unmoved.

“Is this about the kiss Anakin gave?” Disbelief marred her features. “He kissed me, not I him.”

“You should have stayed on Naboo.”

“I came to Geonosis to save you.” Her cheeks flushed from the heat of her words. “You.”

“When he is able,” the door quietly opened, “Anakin will see you back to Naboo.”

A last look is given, her voice quiet. “I did not betray, or fail, you.”
