Fic: ‘Magic, indeed.’
Title: Magic, indeed.
Fandom: Middle-earth: movie-verse.
Rating: (G)
Time Period: Any time between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings; immediately follows Lights in the sky.
Summary: Is it magic?

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

I wrote Lights in the sky at New Year’s (did I need any other reason than fireworks to write that story?). I thought that would be the end of that until next year.

Recently, the story popped back into mind, complete with that small Hobbit who I’d always known was a child and then, the story rattled on with this continuation, which felt perfectly natural.

This follows immediately on from Lights in the sky.

With the exception of original characters created purely for the purpose of the story, all characters contained herein are the intellectual property of JRR Tolkien, the Tolkien Estate and the Tolkien Trust & Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens (their interpretations); I am not affiliated with nor endorsed by them.

The small curly-haired Hobbit stared at the sky and tugged on the Wizard’s robes again. Bemused, the Wizard looked down to the childling snagging his attention. The distance between the two standing was great so he leant down, closer to the childling.

“Is it magic, Gandalf?” A whispered question the Wizard almost lost within the celebrations in the sky.

“Magic?” The Wizard appeared thoughtful to the childling who watched in awe but clearly impatient for a response to a Very Serious Question. “Do you think it is magic?”

The small childling studied the sky, with its flowers, birds and butterflies; with its song and stars. He nodded firmly, eyes wide with wonder as he looked back to the Wizard.

“Then, magic it is,” Gandalf declared solemnly. The Hobbit childling gasped and his eyes reverted from Wizard to sky. The old man chuckled to himself, watching the childling as he wandered away, absent-mindedly, and lit the last fuses. “Magic indeed,” he murmured, listening to the delighted rumblings of conversation from the childling’s elders who watched him carefully.

After all, he was a Wizard.

... and wasn’t he the one involved with Bilbo’s disappearance those years ago?

Gandalf chuckled as he fetched a mug of beer, and lamented that Hobbit-sized pints weren’t the same as those in Bree.

... this makes me think of the movies; especially Merry and Pippin in Bree oddly enough!
