Fic: ‘The same stars.’
Title: The same stars.
Fandom: Lord of the Rings (movies).
Rating: (G)
Time Period: the Two Towers: while Merry & Pippin are with the Ents.
Summary: Merry tried to sleep – again!

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

I’ve been enjoying the Merry & Pippin stories begun with The last word; they’ve been fun to write. So, there’s this one, another one.

And Pippin had the last word, even if it wasn’t verbal!

Yes, Pip?”

“Do y’think these stars,” he nodded to the sky, “are the same ones that’re lookin’ over Frodo and Sam?”

Merry paused, thoughtfully. The stars were very close, as though he could reach out and pluck one from the heavens. “Aye, Pip. I think these are the same stars.”

“Are y’sure?”

“Yes, Pip, I’m sure.”

“Good.” There was rustling nearby, to Merry’s right.

“Why do y’ask Pip?”

More rustling occurred; Pippin’s face peeped at Merry in the starry dark. “The stars will keep ‘em safe, I feel.”

Merry raised an eyebrow although he knew Pippin wouldn’t see it.

“We’ve had some adventures and we’re safe so, maybe ...”

That wasn’t a logic Merry could fault. Nor did he want to. It was better than thinking about what Frodo and Sam were doing. Or not doing. “It’s the same stars, Pip,” he repeated. “Probably the same stars that look over the Shire.”

“Do y’really think so, Merry?”

“Aye, Pip.” He reached down to pull his cloak closer and discovered ... “Pip?”

“Yes, Merry?”

“Where’s my pouch?”

“Which pouch, Merry?”

“You know which one, Pip.”

Sudden snoring greeted Merry, who shook his head at the younger Hobbit. He wrapped himself in his cloak and rolled over. Moments later, his tobacco pouch was snuck over and placed next to his head.
