Fic: ‘She would not die.’
Title: She would not die.
Fandom: Star Wars
Rating: (G)
Time Period: Between AotC and RotS.
Summary: She would not die.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

When I began writing, I had no idea of when this story was set; it simply flowed onto the page, inspired by the accompanying icon by mercscilla. The story’s very basic; quite simply, the story comes down to the simple determination of Obi-Wan: Padmé was going to survive. She would not, if he had any say in the matter, die.

All characters contained herein are the intellectual property of Lucas; I am not affiliated with nor endorsed by him.

Each step weighed heavily, her breathing faint. The fighting was far from where she had fallen. Judicious uses of the Force prevented him dropping the inert body. He didn’t speak, listening the breathing that became increasingly more difficult to hear.

On the edges of his hearing, he could sense small creatures scurrying about their business. He shifted her weight in his arms; it was a good opportunity to pause and listen. Her head fallen back, he could see her throat, see, and feel, the pulse weakly indicating continued life.

Short spurts of breeze spiralled sand around him; night fell. Stars peeped around the solitary moon that rose. He pushed onwards, not wanting to attract larger predators. He felt warmth seeping onto his arm through the sleeve of his tunic. Her breathing hitched. Stopping, he glanced down and then knelt, carefully laying her on the sand.

“Don’t die,” he murmured, his voice now cracked from thirst; the last of the water had been drunk many steps ago. He rolled her onto her side, to see what had happened. His brows furrowed slightly; the bleeding ceased and he pulled the crude bandaging tighter. Carefully, he lifted her from the sand, nestled her close against his body. “Don’t die,” he whispered, the softness easier on the very dry throat.

Slow, steady, the footsteps began again, each one whisked away by cooling gusts of wind. She was heavier now. He coughed, ignoring the itch of thirst at the back of his throat. She would not die, of that he was determined.

She would not die.

Sigh, I love this. I normally get annoyed when stories are short, but this was a nice little morsel. It's like someone gave me a surprise cookie for no reason at all, haha.

Even in text, Obi-Wan can't help but be smoldering. And I'm a sucker for hurt/comfort and angst. Thanks so much for this, you made my night. :D

That's an inspiring icon, all right. I could get into the mood easily with that one and picture a happier conclusion than canon's. Good!

That icon's stayed in mind since, as has this story. It's a very inspiring icon.

Oh, this is such a solemn and heartbreaking (little) piece of fiction, very powerful and makes quite an impact on the reader. Beautiful work that leaves us hoping for more. :)

This is how canon should have been written. ♥
