Fic: ‘Waking to nothing.’
Title: Waking to nothing.
Fandom: Blackpool (TV).
Rating: (G)
Time Period: Episode 5.
Summary: Eventually, he fell asleep.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q. or check this post for the definition).

I had intended to write something more cheery but, somehow, I couldn’t manage it.

Every time he closed his eyes, all he could see was her. The snatches of sleep he’d manage to have in flurried moments of fevered rest, she was snuggled next to him and whispering sweet words of staying with him forever.

He couldn’t even toss and turn. All he could do was lie still in the bed, his brown eyes wide and staring into the nothingness that stretched before him.

Every time she’d walked away in the past, there’d always been hope. Of course, he’d known he’d be stuck in Blackpool for a while with the way this murder investigation was going but therein lay the hope: he’d be here for her to come back to. But, this time, there was nothing.

Nothing except soul-sucking darkness that covered everything he could see.

He closed his eyes and, slowly, he drifted. He snuggled into his pillow; some part of his mind thought it was her even when his conscious mind told him it wasn’t. Her lips were pressed gently against his cheek and when he rolled over, a slight smile quirked the corner of his lips. He could even smell her; it never occurred to him that it was remnants of the perfume she’d worn last time she’d been in bed.

Bleep. Bleep. Bleep. Bleep. Bleep.

Groggily, he rubbed his eyes and the pillow slipped from his arms. He turned to greet her and all he saw was the bed rumpled from his dreaming.

“It was all a dream,” he murmured to the clock.

Bleep. Bleep. Bleep. Bleep. Bleep.

“Nothin’ more than a dream.” His voice cracked.

Bleep. Bleep. Bleep. Bleep. Bleep.

He fell back, turned over, buried his face in the abandoned pillow and cried.

Carlisle was someone who did throw himself in very full-heartedly and openly.
