I know there are some Doctor Who fans amongst those who read morethanacandle and I wasn’t certain if they’d come across this news yet.

Doctor Who flying his last season

Due to cost cutting measures at the BBC, it’s been decided that Doctor Who will be cancelled at the end of its current season. Showrunner Steven Moffat is said to be disappointed but has been offered the chance to take on the reins of a new show and is said to be considering taking the current Doctor, Matt Smith, with him. As yet, the new show has not been named.

The reason given for the loss, as stated by a member of the BBC who spoke on condition of anonymity as the announcement won’t come until the show has begun to air in Britain, has been the rising costs associated with the Cardiff based production. “It keeps becoming bigger in order to make it better when it used to always be about the story previously. Russell T. Davies set a very high benchmark in this regard and Steven Moffat has continued in Davies’ footsteps.

“The costs of the show have become untenable to the BBC who, despite the show’s high ratings, simply cannot afford to continue the show as the costs for each season will simply continue to rise.”

The new series is due to air in Britain this Easter weekend.

This has got to be one of the best April Fools Day pranks ever. The only reason it didn't have me convinced is that I know Moffat's been given a five year contract as showrunner. That and it's still making money for the BBC. I never thought the BBC would do a April Fool's joke though.
