Fic: ‘Tis the Season: Like a spoon.
Title: ‘Tis the Season: Like a spoon.
Fandom: the Hobbit
Rating: (G)
Time Period: The holiday period, after the events in the films.
Summary: The spoon is him.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

I keep picturing chanting while he studies the spoon!

He sits by his desk and holds up a spoon. Silver and not new; he remembers his mother setting them on the table (he also remembers the spoons in Lobelia's care but that's, he decides, for another time).

In particular, the rounded part of the spoon catches his eye. Dwarves have used them, not knowing their value.

To him, any way.

Dwarves. That's the path he wants.

These spoons, like dwarves he knew, were sturdy and dependable. Like Old Toby, they were reliable. The rounded part of the spoon could be filled … then emptied. Like him, he realises. He could be filled with mathoms over the years. New knowledge and skills. New memories.

Out with the old, in with the new. Like, he twirls it in his fingers, a spoon.

He rises from his chair, puts the spoon on his desk and goes to let in the new year.

That's an interesting analogy. Nice scene.

The analogy he's a spoon oddly comes from Lobelia having the spoons.

And thank you; it was a very clear scene to write with how clearly I could envision it.

Oh, this is nice! And could be Bilbo at any point after his return from his Adventure, but I like to think it might be him contemplating bringing Frodo to his home, or later on, when he realizes he wants more journey.

I hadn't thought of Frodo at all when this was written; it's an interesting point to consider, that it could be when he was thinking of bringing Frodo to his home.
