Fic: ‘Tis the Season: The past leading the future.
Title: ‘Tis the Season: The past leading the future.
Fandom: Bones
Rating: (PG)
Time Period: During season 9.
Summary: The past influences the future.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

I've not written this pair as a couple, nor for a while (I rarely write them). But I can see this pair talking like this around this time of year as well.

All characters contained herein are the intellectual property of Hart Hanson; I am not affiliated with nor endorsed by him.

He sits on the sofa, reading a card before closing it. On the front is a Santa Claus in sunglasses with HO! HO! HO! in white letters and glitter. He sets the card on the coffee table and looks over at her, gathering Christine for bed and he smiles, remembering.

He remembers looking at her through the window of the trailer when he and Parker brought that tree, using his car battery for the lights. He remembers that kiss under the mistletoe in her office for Caroline. He remembers when she said she could be a duck. He remembers her channelling Clara Bow.

He remembers when it was only he and Parker for Christmas and she was somewhere else in the world, identifying skeletons. He remembers arresting her father and wondering if she'd ever forgive him while he iced his groin (he can rarely think of ice now without a twinge there now).

He remembers when she came to him and the night they created Christine. He remembers when they danced and he twirled her in his arms, how happy she looked to be there.

“What are you thinking about?”

“Oh, just about how our past leads into our future,” he replies as he reaches for the card and looks at it again. “Christine in bed?”

“Yes, and sleeping,” she chuckles and leans forward for her glass of red wine; she'd left it there for now just before settling Christine in bed. “What's that?”

“What, this?” He shows her the card.

“That's from my parents, Booth.” She sets down her glass, takes the card. “Where'd you find this?”

“Upstairs.” He slips an arm around her shoulders. “Look, Temperance, we should put that somewhere until after New Years and we put it upstairs, in our room in a drawer. Our past is who we are and we can't forget that.”

“This is personal, Seeley,” she looks at him. “You shouldn't have touched this.”

He takes the card from her hand. “You thinking about hiding this?”

“Temperance ...”

“Fine,” she lightly huffs. “I was.”

“Don't.” He holds the card between them. “It's part of who you are, just as I am.”

“You are?”

“Think back over the past ten or so years,” he says simply. “Can you remember a time when we weren't in each other's lives somehow?”

“You have a point,” she answers, taking the card back and opening it.

“It's our past. This is your past. It's also our future.”

“You know your parents loved you. They still do,” he adds. “It's something you'll give Christine. It shows your past, our future.”

“That's … poetic.”

He smiles and pulls her closer, holding a cushion toward the baby monitor. Temperance chuckles but then she sees the cushion. “What are you doing?”

“Just making sure,” he says, leaning closer and holding the cushion up.

“She's upstairs, Booth.”

“Just bear with me on this one, okay?”

“Sure,” she says as she snuggles into him, slips her arms around his neck.

Crying erupts from the baby monitor. Booth throws the cushion aside and Temperance stands, to answer the crying. “See you in a few minutes?”

Booth nods and stands, walking toward the fridge.

That's.... wow. Intense. Sweet.

Also, they have the worst luck of any couple in TV-land when it comes to securing alone time.

It is?

They do. I blame the cushion!

This is lovely, thank you for sharing (found your story through bones_ga.

I especially like how you write so the reader can see this play out when reading and how part of it is happening between the lines, e g how they use their first names. Bones and Booth use first names so rarely and only in special circumstances and you make it work so well here.

You're very welcome and thank you!

I like how they rarely used first names in the show and it works so well here.

Just squeezing in "Seeley" and "Temperance" doesn't work, but done right, like here, it adds to the story.

I've been thinking about finishing a B&B story I started ages ago, if only for myself because I don't like to leave things unfinished, this provided inspiration :)

It did? Wow. I'm so glad it did for you! I'll keep an eye out on bones_ga for it if you put it there!
