Fic: ‘Tis the Season: The apron is the thing.
Title: ‘Tis the Season: The apron is the thing.
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0 (modern)
Rating: (G)
Time Period: Season 4, after Hauʻoli La HoʻomaikaʻI or Happy Thanksgiving.
Summary: A domestic goddess.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

I can quite clearly picture Steve in a frilly apron but he'd probably wear something more 'manly', apron-wise. But that picture I had? That's why this story came about!

This comes after Thanksgiving in season 4; no spoilers for the episode but having seen it might add some meaning for some.

“Is there something you're not telling me?”

Steve sets down the tray; he could feel its heat through the mitts. “What?”

Catherine waves at the tray now set down. “Are you a domestic goddess?”

Steve laughs, sets the oven mitts next to the tray. Warmth and melted chocolate fill the air between them. “I found an old recipe and wanted to try it. I don't know,” he glances at the cooling cookies, “if it worked yet.”

With a chuckle, Catherine walks into the kitchen, standing opposite him as she leans forward slightly. “They smell good.” She looks at him. “First Thanksgiving and now this. I could get used to it.”

“Take away is what I do,” he says as he turns the oven off.

“And these are not cookies?”

“They are but like I said, I don't know if they've worked yet.”

She laughs, walks around the island and snuggles under his arm. “Why'd you cook them anyway? I know,” she interrupts his opening mouth, “about the recipe. What I don't know is why.”

“It's something I wanted to try.”

“To make sure it feels like a family Christmas,” she says softly, remembering Thanksgiving.

He doesn't reply.

“But this?” She taps his apron.

“It's to protect my clothes.”

“To protect your clothes,” she repeats slowly.

“That's right,” he replies. “I was cooking and ---”

“--- and wanted to show you were the cook. I get it now.”

“Are you going to tell anyone about the apron?”

“Not at all.”

“That's a relief.”

“Show them, on the other hand ...”

“Catherine!”

He chases her through the house.

Oy vey! She's incorrigible.

Which is possibly why she fits with Steve so well.
