Standing in the doorway, the door open wide, he steps outside, his feet crunching on the snow beneath, the wintry fresh air zipping past.

He reaches for the pouch at his side, to tamp a little weed into the bowl and light it. The moment the pipe is lit, he lets it dangle from his lips while he quickly ensures his dressing gown is closed, snug and warm.

Where had he learned this custom, to let in the incoming year whilst letting out the old?

He cannot remember, as he puffs on his pipe, studying the stars above; stars so close, all he has to do is reach up and pluck one from the velvety sky. It is, he decides, a lovely custom, letting the incoming year fill the home, it meeting the outgoing year on its way out. Otherwise, he knew, he’d let the stuffy air from the old year fill his home until the spring.

Smoke rings mingle with the stars.

One last puff, damping the glowing sparks within the pipe, closing the door behind as he goes inside. He smiles at the sky through a window and carefully places his pipe on the mantel when he passes it, on his way to the kitchen. One last snack before bed cannot hurt, he tells himself. A quick second supper to welcome the new come year.

“Pity Gandalf isn’t here,” he murmurs.

And quickly glances toward the front door, half-expecting a knock. Or several.

Oh, this is lovely! Calm and just a tiny bit bittersweet, and a lovely way to start the new year. :)

Oh, this is lovely!
Thank you, very much. Fireworks just seemed so loud and noisy to this quiet moment.

Happy 2013 to you!

I really like this. The tradition feels very right for Bilbo, and the ending is really lovely.

Thank you so very much; this was a pleasure, a joy, to write and I'm so very glad someone finds the tradition true for Bilbo.

Happy 2013!

Another absolutely gorgeous vignette! I love the melancholy wistfulness and yet the sweet hopefulness and peace in this story. And I can easily imagine that this introspective custom would be one he'd pass down to his young cousin when he comes into his home.

And I can see him doing this both as the younger Bilbo of TH or the older one of LotR...

Perfectly lovely.

(And the dressing gown again...*grin*)
