Fic: ‘He’ll do his best.’
Title: He’ll do his best.
Fandom: Doctor Who.
Rating: (G)
Time Period: After the end of The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe.
Summary: She asks him not to leave.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

I saw Pond Life and wrote this as a prologue to that.

If you’ve not seen Pond Life or don’t intend to, this can be read as a standalone.

“Doctor, wait.”

He stops in the doorway and spins about; slowly. He’s had a lot of Christmas dinner; he knows Rory’s amazed he can move. Maybe he has a faster metabolism than humans; it’s something he should look into. Or remember. He doesn’t know quite which. Maybe the food had an effect after all.

“What is it, Pond?”

Amy tugs on the sleeve of her jumper before hiding it behind her back. “Don’t leave,” she says.

“I’ve got to. People to chase me, places to surf.”

“Don’t leave,” she repeats. “Don’t vanish like you did. We know you’re not dead and you’re part of the family. Our family,” she finishes, watching him closely. “Don’t just leave. Let us know how you’re doing, what you’re doing.”

He regards her, long and not particularly hard. “All right,” he concedes. “I won’t leave. Leave, yes, but not leave.”

Amy smiles, faint and quiet. “Thank you. I waited once without word,” she reminds him, “and I waited again. I won’t wait any more.”

“Point taken,” he accepts. “I’ll call regularly so you know what I’m up to. Sure you won’t come?” he suddenly asks. “One last adventure before you settle into this life fully?”

She tilts her head, red hair falling over her shoulder. “I’m settled, Doctor,” she replies. “I have a life and a husband. I’ve grown up.”

“We can always knock that off you,” he says, clapping his hands together and rubbing them.

“Just,” she reaches over and places a hand on his shoulder, “don’t leave.”

“I’ll do my best,” he honestly answers. “I’ll try my best.”

She nods, folding her arms. His promise is in those words.

He turns away, out the front door and skipping across the road to the TARDIS. She watches, following to the door because she knows he’ll forget, and he looks up and jauntily waves. She smiles, waves back and closes the door once she hears the TARDIS.

“Was that the TARDIS I heard?” Rory asks as she sits next to him, snuggling against his side.

“He’s left the parking brakes on.”

Rory nods and holds his wife close.

Thank you! I didn't think she'd let him wander off again. For me, I felt there had to be a reason for what he does in Pond Life (with regard Amy and Rory, not Mata Hari!).

I'm thinking of writing something after each one. Not sure; people might feel pestered!

Personally, I'd like that!! Little insights/continuations on each tidbit? Sounds perfect!

I don't know about insights or continuations but I'm thinking of li'l fun tidbits (that seems an apt description for them, both what I'll probably write and the videos).

I am tempted to write something that includes something like the poker! ;P

I love this, because it just shows how much Amy really has grown up. The Doctor's still her best friend and part of their family, but she has her own life and likes it; no more waiting. Lovely. <3

This works really well with it. And loved the references all the way back to the 11th hour...

It does explain the phone call.

Thank you!

And yes, it does, which was the whole point!

Frankly I dunno how you can do this. Too painful and sad for words. Interesting perspective though!

Frankly I dunno how you can do this.
In what way?
Maemae_linda on May 3rd, 2013 02:16 pm (UTC)
I stayed away from any episode with Ponds after The Angels Take Manhattan.

I am still a bit too sad to back and see any AmyRory episodes.

I suppose I mean you create beautiful continuations that at this time I wouldn't be able to even consider writing. *shrugs*

Oh, okay! Thank you.
