Adar, what is this?”

Elrond turns, smiling when he sees the prickly dark ring in his daughter’s hands. “A gift.”

Carefully, Arwen turns it so she can study its face, frowning thoughtfully.

“It is to be hung in the home,” Elrond explains, “during winter celebrations.”

“It sounds,” Arwen offers it to her father, “like a custom of Men.”

“Or Halflings,” he chuckles, resting the wreath on the table before him.

“From what plant is it made?”

“Holly,” he promptly replies. “It brings protection to the home in the cold dark winter, I believe.”

Arwen nods, regarding the wreath anew. “It should be hung in the Hall of Fire, adar.”

He raises an eyebrow.

“Should its protection not be given to the heart of Imladris during the cold dark of winter?”

He picks up the wreath, offering it to her. “Go, with my blessing.”

She curtsies as she accepts the wreath – carefully – with a smile and turns toward the wreath’s new home.
