Fic: ‘The first lesson.’
Title: The first lesson.
Fandom: Chronicles of Narnia (movie)
Rating: (G)
Time Period: During the Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe: during the Golden Age.
Summary: Lucy would like Susan to teach her.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

Lucy has skill with the bow in Voyage of the Dawn Treader; this is my attempt to explain those skills.

“Teach me.”

Susan blinks, looks up from the letter she’s writing. “Pardon me, Lucy?”

A bow and a quiver clatter on the table. “Teach me.”

Susan sets aside the letter, the pen left in the ink. “What do you want me to teach you?” She rests her hands on the desk.

Lucy taps the quiver, filled with one or three arrows. “This.”

Lucy turns, pulls over a chair and sits. “I want to know how to defend myself.”

“You already know that.”

“Yes, with a knife. But I want to know more. I want to ride with Peter and Edmund when they ride to someone’s aid if one of them isn’t present. Also,” Lucy leans forward, “what happens if I’m ever riding alone and am lost, am attacked? Would you have me be only able to defend myself with a knife?”

Susan plucks an arrow from the quiver and turns it between her fingers, watching the fletching as she does. Finally, her eyes rise from the arrow. “Are you certain of this? I would like nothing more than to teach you but you need to be certain before I nock even one arrow to teach you.”

“I am certain.”

Susan looks from her letter to the bow on her desk. She twangs the string and shakes her head; she stands and unstrings the bow. “Then the first lesson.”

Lucy leans forward.

“Unstring the bow when it is not in use.”

Lucy nods and stands. “Shall we begin now?”

Susan laughs and, coming around the desk, rests her hand on her sister’s shoulder as they walk from the room, the quiver once more in Lucy’s hand as they leave.
