Fic: ‘May it keep her safe.’
Title: May it keep her safe.
Fandom: Lord of the Rings (movies).
Rating: (G)
Time Period: Before events in Lord of the Rings.
Summary: Elrond gives a great gift.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

In the films, we see Arwen with a sword: Hadhafang. There had to be a reason why she had it.

All Elven can be read if you pass your mouse over the words.

Flexing her fingers around the hilt, she lays the blade across her other palm.

Aen estar Hadhafang i chathol hen, thand arod dan i thang an i arwen, Idril i hel en aran Gond Dolen,” she softly reads, her eyes widening as she does.

She doesn’t hear her father as he stands nearby. “It is called Throng-cleaver this broadsword-blade,” he softly repeats, “defence noble against the throng for noble lady, Idril, daughter of the king of the Hidden Rock.” He clears his throat and steps closer to her.

Ada,” she gasps, her eyes meeting his.

“It is called Hadhafang.” He lays his hand reverently over the inscription. “It once belonged to the mother of my father and it kept me safe during the Dagorlad. I pray it may keep you safe, “ he finishes, his gaze rising from the blade. “No galu govad gen.”

Le hannon, ada,” she whispers and he draws his hand away.

Ná Elbereth veria le, Arwen,” he replies before he turns, walking away. He stops and half turns his head. “I will tell Glorfindel to expect you.”

He leaves his daughter sitting, studying the gift he has given.

I liked this and it makes sense for Arwen to know how to use a sword.

I liked this
Thank you; I was nervous about this story and giving Arwen the sword we see in the films; I know so many people who get upset with me, or were upset with the films (in which she has a sword and not in her story), for saying the same as you do.

It makes sense that she'd know how to use one as well.

Simply beautiful. I like the fact it was a gift.

Simply beautiful.
Thank you.

I like the fact it was a gift.
It felt right for Elrond to have given it to her and to have spoken to someone about teaching her so she knew the right way to use it.

Great fic! I've always thought that Glorfindel might have taught Arwen how to use the sword (in case of need, not because she's a warrior), even if Tolkien never wrote it, it's my head!canon :)
