Fic: ‘Into the fray he goes.’
Title: Into the fray he goes.
Fandom: Lord of the Rings (movies).
Rating: (G)
Time Period: During events in Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King: just after the Orcs have taken Frodo.
Summary: He’s onto his third breath.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

After writing Where are the kitchens?, this came to mind.

Sam is a very new character to me so forgive me if he feels ‘off’ in any way.

In his hands, it feels wrong. His hands, callused from soil and flowers, trowels and hoes, have no business holding a sword but here he is, holding a sword. And not just any sword, he’ll admit, but Mister Bilbo’s sword. The stories he’s heard about this sword gives him a second breath; the first was when he realised Mister Frodo was in danger.

Not just any danger, mind, but danger in Mordor with Orcs. He’d promised himself, and Gandalf, not to let Mister Frodo out of his sight and look at what happened when he had: Mister Frodo’d been captured and taken into that nasty dark tower! With filthy Orcs who Sam’d never let near his flower beds, that was certain!

Another breath; he’s ignoring the shiny blue of the blade because if he stops and thinks, he knows he’ll be in trouble.

“Mister Frodo needs me,” he mutters as he starts walking through the outer gate and into the courtyard. Orcs lie dead in heaps about him but he resolutely looks forward, knowing he’ll jump out of his skin should one of those dead Orcs start talking or even wiggle a finger. He holds Sting close as he walks through the nearest arch.

Footsteps far ahead and he narrows his eyes, readying himself for the worst.

I like the scene that follows but I've always wondered at the 'immediately before' moment.
