Her arms filled with linens, she stops to watch. The smooth line of the arm, the dance between sword and man. So elegant and clean in movements she feels she will never match. She watches the feet, seeing the steps rather than the overall movement; it will be easier, she feels, to learn from watching the steps than the whole dance.

Hearing footsteps approach, she squares her shoulders but is halted by a firm, warm hand upon her shoulder. “Shall we walk together, Éowyn, so none might think you idling?”

Quickly, as she turns to face him, her lips quirk upward. “There is no need, m’lord,” she curtsies.

“Let me aid you in your task,” her uncle chuckles, reaching for some of her load.

She shakes her head. “There is no need,” she repeats. “I dallied in the sunlight for the warmth it gives. I should not have done so.”

He narrows his eyes thoughtfully and his gaze follows the line hers had taken. “I see.” He coughs lightly, still studying the man and his sword. “Does your eye wander while you dally?”

She blushes faintly and shakes her head. “No, m’lord,” she finally replies. It is best, she feels, that he not discern the true purpose of her watching the young man. He smiles at the sudden burst of colour in her cheeks and he nods. “I merely dallied for the sun.”

“Best be on your way, then.” He pats her shoulder. “If it be asked, I delayed you.”

She nods and turns from her uncle, walking swiftly from the scene. She cannot help a last furtive glance, memorising the movements of the feet. Théoden shakes his head with a quiet chuckle as he sees her look and stands, hands behind his back, watching the young man thrust and parry.

I'm imagining him looking into who the young man is since his niece seems so interested ...
