A deep breath and a thought that perhaps she should have sent a Handmaiden to purchase this. Perhaps ... A soft laugh at the thought of her chief of security buying a soft toy.

She glances around, surrounded by a veritable zoo. How can she choose one?

An unknown sigh of relief escapes; at least she has already bought a present for Ryoo.

She feels she must be careful with this, Pooja’s first gift. It might be a toy from which she’ll never be parted and will love forever. So, it has to be sweet and not garish. It has to be very soft for baby, and then childish, hands to carry and not be afraid to drop. It must not stain easily. It should be able to be found easily if lost. It ...

“May I help you?”

She slowly turns. “No, thank you.” The woman politely nods and she cannot help the words that come next. “Yes, you can.”

The woman gently laughs. “I thought I may.” She has noticed the Handmaiden garb, of cloak and gown, but says nothing; her approval of their current Queen resides in the swirls on her skirt, the light blue of her tunic. “For what occasion ...?”

“My sister recently gave birth. A girl and I don’t know what to give.”

“Your first gift?”

She nods and the woman turns. There are stuffed shaak nearby and she turns, one in hand. “This.”

She crinkles her nose at the bright colours; dark purple and orange. “Does it ... are there other colours?”

“I’m afraid not,” the woman replies and she offers the toy; the young woman accepts. “It’s very sturdy and those colours will hide any messes very well.”

She pinches it between her fingertips. “It is very soft,” she murmurs, half to herself.

“Which is wonderful for a baby. They won’t hurt themselves on any sharp corners. It’ll be useful for chewing, as well, when her teeth are coming through.”

She bites her lip; it’s ... well ... “The colours are brighter than I thought to buy,” she finally confesses.”

“All the better to hide, as I mentioned before, any messes or stains.”

She slowly nods. “Very well!” She hands it back to the older woman to wrap and she follows her to the counter to pay.

Later, when Pooja is sucking on it in her crib, she apologises to Sola and Darred for the bright, almost discordant colours. Darred laughs and hugs, his arm around her shoulder and drawing her close. “It is perfect,” he proclaims. “With those colours, it won’t be easily lost!”

It's a nice picture to see, I feel.

And that poor toy - so much to live up to!

*giggles* Can you imagine her sending Typho to buy that? Or Panaka if this was bought while she was Queen?

I love how she's scared of the colours and the woman convinces her :D

And the ending is sweet ♥

Completely! I can see either of them approaching the store dubiously, being in the store ...

... and promptly leaving, asking her to send a Handmaiden in his place!

I love how she's scared of the colours and the woman convinces her :D
I couldn’t blame her for wanting the softer colours, though. Those were very bright and garish!

And the ending is sweet ♥
Thank you. It’s how I pictured it since No longer lost and thought it’d be a shame not to include it somehow in this short series of stories. This story was just the perfect one to slip it into.
