Fic: ‘Tis the Season: A late night conversation.
Title: ‘Tis the Season: A late night conversation.
Fandom: Chronicles of Narnia (movie)
Rating: (G)
Time Period: After events in the Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe.
Summary: Her second Christmas in Narnia.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

This is the fourth of the Chronicles of Narnia stories I’d decided to write for ‘Tis the Season after seeing the Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe not too long ago; it is also the last of this particular series.

And posted a day early because I had the inspiration for it, wrote it and thought ‘why the heck not?!’ when it came to posting!

This is the story that comes after Hope renewed.

“Lucy Pevensie!” A voice from behind scolded. “You’re supposed to be in bed! As Queen of Narnia, you’re supposed to be setting an example!”

Lucy turned, with a small sigh at having been caught. “But ... but ... presents!” She exclaimed with a faint pout. “This is my first Narnian Christmas ...”

“... it’s your second,” she was gently reminded.

“... second Narnian Christmas,” she promptly, absently, corrected, “and I want to see him!”

“Am I to assume you mean Father Christmas?”

“Why, yes, you silly Faun!” She laughed and twirled, her nightdress flaring slightly as she did. “Who else would I mean at Christmas?”

He shook his head, his lips curving at the corners. “How silly of me, Your Majesty, to think it could be anyone else.”

She laughed quietly and sat upon the seat under the window. “I want to thank him, Mr Tumnus,” she suddenly explained, her hands in her lap as she spoke. “For the potion. If it hadn’t been for that ...” Her voice trailed away, the terrible memory of Edmund on the ground, surrounded by the dead and dying, rising.

The Faun placed a hand on her shoulder and gave it a comforting squeeze. “Come to bed, Lucy Pevensie,” he sat next to her on the seat and drew her in a one-armed hug. “He might not come if he knows you are waiting so diligently, nor deliver the presents he has for you and your sister and brothers.”

That roused her heart from sad remembrance. “Don’t say such a thing!” She clapped a hand over his mouth before he could answer. “And I’ve told you,” she admonished, “to call me Lucy.”

He could only nod with her hand over his mouth and, slowly, she lowered it. “I’m sitting here to wait.” She paused. “Why are you here, Mr Tumnus?”

“In the palace?”

“I know why you’re at Cair Paravel, silly,” she giggled. “I meant here, with me.”

“That’s easy, y—Lucy,” he hastily corrected; it felt wrong to say her name without her surname. “I came to tuck you into bed when I heard you creeping past my door so late at night.”

“Were you dancing with the Dryads?”

He chuckled. “That’s in the summer, Lucy Pevensie.” He ignored her glare as he said her name complete with surname. “No, I was trying to remember a tune my father had taught me so very long ago. Would you like to hear it?”

She studied him suspiciously. “It’s not a lullaby, is it?”

“Do the songs I play ever resemble what they’re meant to be?” He asked, chuckling. “You’ve heard many Narnian songs now and you know whether or not they do. I must fetch my pipes from my room. Will you wait for me?”

She nodded and he was no more than a few steps away when he turned to see her curled up on the window seat, fast asleep. He walked quietly back and sat next to her once more. “You shan’t wait for him alone,” he whispered and tugged her night gown more closely about her as he waited.

It wasn’t too long before he was asleep, himself.

Aww, I love this. ♥ Lucy and Mr. Tumnus' friendship is one of my favorite things about The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. You captured their relationship so well with this tender story, F.J.! It's already a favorite of mine. :)

I'm looking forward to getting through the rest of your holiday fics... ;)
