Fic: 'Affirmation of Life.'
Title: Affirmation of Life.
Fandom: Star Wars
Rating: (G)
Time Period: Clone Wars: After Obi-Wan's escape from Rattatak.
Summary: Obi-Wan comes to see Padmé, on Naboo.

Author's Note: It's Valentine's Day, and I wanted to write a story to celebrate the day. I didn't want to write something long, as this was spontaneous and thanks to some friends who helped me greatly, a prompt was decided upon, to keep the spontaneity of the short 'fic - the prompt is 'kiss'. This story is also me challenging myself, since I don't write brief stories like this, often.

He is alive.

With each new report, her heart had slowed, almost stopping in fearful anticipation until the report was finished and his name still among the living.

With the last report she had heard those fateful weeks ago, her heart had stopped and her breath caught in her throat. A hand had risen to cover her mouth in disbelief and tears had welled. That report had told her that her fear had become a reality and the man she had come to realise she loved was now dead, lost in an explosion on a distant and soggy planet.

On Coruscant, she had been unable to stay; she had needed time: time to grieve, time to remember he would not be returning, time to hold newly-discovered emotions close to her heart. On Coruscant, she didn’t have that freedom; her attention would be required for Senate matters, for Anakin. This once, she would be selfish and think of the needs of the one instead of the needs of the many. So, to Naboo, she had gone.

It was on Naboo she heard he was alive; the news relayed to her by Sio Bibble who remembered the friendship between his Senator and the Jedi Master. Shock, once more, caused her breath to catch, her heart to falter before relief surged and her lips curved in a smile that bespoke her joy at such news.

He is alive. Brown eyes seek the distant island to which she and her sister would swim during school retreat. Her heart that had felt dead, lain heavily these past weeks has lightened. Her hand rests on the cool stone. The breeze whispers about the shimmersilk gown she wears, slides deft invisible fingers along shoulders bared to an inviting sun.

He is --

Here.

She knows those footsteps don’t belong to Anakin. She knows they don’t belong to Sola or Pooja and Ryoo. She doesn’t turn, not until his hand rests on her shoulder – a polite alert to his presence. Only then does she trust herself to do so. Only then, as her head tilts, as her hand reaches to brush her fingertips against his bearded cheek, his lips, does she face him.

In the days since Sio Bibble told her the news of his life, she has imagined the words she would use to greet him, carefully chosen so her feelings would not betray her.

“Padmé.” A whispered caress, her name, as he leans forward and all words vanish as his hand slides along her shoulder, upward to cradle her cheek and his lips descend to hers, tenderly. Her lips part and her eyes close, as she trembles from his nearness, shivers from the delicacy of his touch.

It should stop. She should step away but she cannot. Instead, her hands grab the outer earth brown robe and her fingers curl in the coarsely woven fabric as she tugs him closer. Both his hands hold her face, as he leans closer to her and she to him, to affirm this is no dream.

Finally, there is distance and blue eyes meet brown.

“Obi-Wan.” Barely heard except he is close and hears easily his name. Hears the relief, the joy in his continued life. He had had to come, to see and reassure her. His fool’s errand, he had supposed.

Boldness born of a kiss that should never have been in the afternoon sun, again he is kissed. An affirmation of life, she will later say.

Soon, he will return to the war that claimed his life and gave him back to her.

He is alive.

He is here.

Soon can wait.

Positively beautiful! For some reason, I found myself holding my breath along with Padme. I could really feel the emotions in the kiss.

A wonderful short story. ^^

Thank you! I wasn't certain the kiss actually worked, to be completely truthful since I'm always wondering if I'm writing a kiss well.

And again, thank you for your kind words. I'm really glad this story worked well for you.

Lovely! I can visualise that scene so well as you described it... breathtaking. I'm sorry I missed your poll, but this is the one I would have voted for :)

Thank you! I'm pleased that you enjoyed it. and as for the poll, there will likely be another one!

I'm quietly thrilled you could visualise it because I know that sometimes, I don't do very well at conveying what it is that I can see to others and I wasn't certain - at all - that I actually did that with this. It's been a long time since I've written something so short that I felt as though I was missing key details in description.

That's... both tragic, exciting and suspenseful all at once.

I could really feel how happy she was on hearing he was alive; but that's also part of the tragedy of it all, at least for me.

Thank you.

Suspenseful is the one thing that people haven't said about this story, so this is interesting to me that this is your interpretation.

Wow! This little story is so beautiful! I loved every word - and I loved how you described the kiss, the emotions - and I nearly melted at the end! You are a very talented writer...I can't wait to read more of your work.

Thank you very kindly for such a wonderful comment; I really like feedback like this as it lets me know what it is that you liked about the story.

I'm pleased that you enjoyed the story - it was something that I simply had the idea for on the morning of Valentine's Day and then wrote, once the prompt was decided upon.

With regard to more of my work, I'm currently writing the final chapter of the 'Behind You' trilogy, which will be posted in the near future.

I loved it. Once again, the reader can feel every emotion that's being felt by the characters. I empathized with Padme very much. You do a fine job at writing everything so vividly. I felt like I was a fly on a nearby tree, watching everything as it happened.

It should stop. She should step away but she cannot. Instead, her hands grab the outer earth brown robe and her fingers curl in the coarsely woven fabric as she tugs him closer. Both his hands hold her face, as he leans closer to her and she to him, to affirm this is no dream.

I really love this part. :) It's just like your cute icon!

I felt like I was a fly on a nearby tree, watching everything as it happened.
Thank you very much! I'm glad I managed to convey that immediacy. I wasn't certain that I had done so, honestly, since I scribbled this down on the day and hoped for the best!

I really love this part. :) It's just like your cute icon!
The icon for this story was a deliberate choice and the icon itself had also inspired a story, on its own. I'd been dying to use the icon for a while now (I have so many saved to the computer!) and this just seemed the appropriate time to do so! I didn't actually realise the parallels between icon and story until afterward, and I'd posted the story!

Thank you, very kindly!

If you'd care to, do check the memories for any further Obidala. All but two stories have been Obidala.
