Fic: ‘A question of trust.’
Title: A question of trust.
Fandom: Star Wars
Rating: (G)
Time Period: During tPM when Padmé’s watching the message from Sio Bibble.
Summary: Obi-Wan asks her to stop watching the message and to trust.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q. or check this post for the definition).

This story was inspired by the accompanying icon by emiv; I had a few ideas and this is just one of them. It turned out a little longer than I thought it would be and I believe it borders on Obidala in places although not intentionally.

Her hand caught, she looked over her shoulder. His fingers gently enclosed her wrist; she wasn’t going to replay the message any time soon.

“Do not play it again.”

“It is my duty to know more of the fate of the Naboo.”

A crooked smile quirked his lips very faintly as he dropped to one knee elegantly, still keeping hold of her wrist. “Perhaps you must but it is late and you have watched it a lot in the past hour. Does a Handmaiden of the Queen need to be so aware of her people’s plight?”

Her shoulders stiffened. “It is my duty to know.”

Blue eyes met brown and neither flinched. “I can feel your fear,” he informed her softly. “Do not surrender to it. Do not allow anyone to know you are afraid or impatient to return home.”

Her chin jutted upward. “I am not afraid or impatient. I –” She forced herself to stop; there was one secret she could not – would not – betray. “I am not afraid,” she repeated stubbornly.

He caught her chin between two fingers and gently brought it down. “I am not your enemy, young Handmaiden. I am not the Trade Federation who hunts your Queen to sign their agreement in order to make their invasion legal,” he quietly told her. “I am the padawan assigned to protect your Queen with my Master. I will protect her.

“And you,” he whispered so quietly she wasn’t certain she had heard him. “Trust your Queen to know what is best and do not betray your fear or impatience. I trust she knows the plight of your people.”

He calmed and soothed. It was perhaps his intention, with the Force aiding him, but she forced a small smile. “I trust my Queen as I trust myself, Jedi Kenobi.” A small respect but it was paid for what he did. “I worry. I am afraid but not for myself. I ...”

“Everyone from Naboo on this vessel left family behind. Be patient,” he counselled. “Trust.”

“Trust as my Queen, as I, knew not to trust the Trade Federation?” A soft bitter laugh escaped her. “I cannot trust in these times, knowing my people suffer while I flee to Coruscant.”

“Trust not in the Force, your family or the Queen, then.” He released her wrist only to catch her face between his palms. He wanted to keep her gaze on him, for her to hear his voice and not be distracted by the nearby holoplayer; if he did not, she would replay that message. “Trust in me, my Master. Trust us.” His hold relaxed. “Trust in yourself to know how not to betray your fear and impatience.

“It is all I ask.”

She hadn’t expected such passion from a Jedi. “I shall take your words to heart but do not trust me to listen very well.”

He let a breath slowly out, not a sigh but close, and he lowered his hands. “Go to bed, young Handmaiden. Leave the news of woe until tomorrow.”

“Will you accompany me to our quarters? I may turn back to watch this again.”

He rose, extending a hand. “It, young Handmaiden, will be my pleasure.”

That was amazing.

I believe I turned into a pile of goo. *la sigh* A lovely pile of goo.

You certainly have a knack for writing O/P. :)

Thank you! (After you've reconstituted.)

I honestly believe that my Obidala isn’t very good at all. Although, I confess, I didn't see this story as an Obidala. =D

I have to confess - I haven't read much SW fic over the past several months. This fic is the first one I've read in a long time, and I'm glad I went with this one first. IMO, you captured the nature of their relationship so well in such a subtle yet meaningful way. The whole fic left me with a comforting feeling as well, which I liked. :)

Thanks for sharing this, F.J.! You're still the great writer that I've always known you to be. ♥

I feel honoured; thank you.

I’m glad it gave you that – I wasn’t certain which way it might be seen by people when they read it.

Thank you very much. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

This is very nice. I like the stilted formality of the dialogue, because it is how they both talk in the film. I think you've captured the essence of their personalities (and added the hints of an attraction, but I have no opinion about that :P).

added the hints of an attraction
This was accidental! I honestly didn’t realise that I’d written that in until after this was finished and I was double-checking for typos.

I think you've captured the essence of their personalities
I’ve not watched this movie in approximately three years so to hear that I’ve captured their personalities is really wonderful to hear – thank you!
