Leroy leans on a broom he's using to sweep behind the side counter. “You're never going to shift them.”

Granville halts in putting the packets on the display he's created. “And why do you say that?”

Leroy leans the broom on the counter and comes around, pointing at the display. “You want to sell bells to them around here?”

“They're jingle bells,” Granville confidently asserts as he gestures to them. “From the north.”

“North Pole?”

“No,” Granville replies. “The north. It's not my fault if people think North Pole, is it?”

“It's the holidays,” Leroy points out. “They're going to think North Pole.”

“That's not my problem,” Granville protests. “I'll just say it's from the north, which is the truth.”

Leroy shakes his head. “And what's the old cobblers you have with this?”

“Nothing but the truth. They're jingle bells.”

“Jingle bells?”

“Yes. Jingle bells.”

“As in that holiday song?”

“Yes.”

“So,” Leroy asks, resigning himself to the bunkum he's sure will follow, “what's their story?”

“What's what story?”

“The jingle bells.”

“So glad you asked,” Granville says while putting his arm over Leroy's shoulders.

Leroy disentangles himself, and waits.

“These,” Granville holds up a string of bells, “are jingle bells, from the north. When they're rung ---”

“An angel gets its wings?”

“No,” Granville answers before reaching to swat Leroy up the back of the head after pocketing the bells. “The holiday spirit fills people.”

Leroy forgets to duck the swat aimed for the back of his head. “That doesn't sound like old cobblers at all.” He regards his father hard. “That sounds almost ...”

“Almost what, then?”

Nice,” Leroy sputters before natural cynicism kicks in. “When did you start being nice?”

“No,” Granville answers before reaching to swat Leroy up the back of the head, again.

“I'm nice all the time,” Granville replies as he picks up the packets and starts placing them in the display. “Ask y'mum.”

Leroy shakes his head as he goes to pick up his broom again. The bell above the door rings and Leroy wonders if the person who just came in will leave with some jingle bells in their hand when they go.
