Climbing onto the seat, he rests his chin on his hands atop the counter. “What’re you doing?”

“What does it look like?”

He tilts his head, eyes narrowing as he determines if that’s a trick question. She turns to look at him, eyebrow raised. “Well?” She prompts, leaning across the counter from him.

“Cooking,” he finally replies.

“No.”

“No?”

“No,” she shakes her head slightly. “Would you like some milk?”

“Don’t change the subject,” he answers. “If you’re at the oven and not cooking, what are you doing?”

“Baking,” she says as she fetches milk from the fridge, then a glass from a cupboard. “Treats for you,” she explains.

Greed fights curiosity; the latter wins. “Why?”

She pours the milk. “Well,” she begins, “it’s cold, isn’t it? So why not treats, like cookies?”

He grins; she chuckles. “Drink your milk and by the time you’re done? The muffins should be done.”

He grins; she laughs. The milk is drunk fast.

OK, that was precious, and that last line was beautiful and right on point.

You've also hit on something here that has been bugging me with this show since the beginning:

Regina can’t have been all bad, I feel. Who knows how many moments like these she had with Henry?

Agreed and YES. She was controlling, sure, but she raised him from infancy and, without a doubt, loves him more than anything else on the planet. There had to be moments like this, and more, from day one. The show leaves so much to be desired with their relationship, which is why this was such a treat to read, because I WANT this, I want her to have been an OK mom at some point. Because bad people can love just as strongly as the good ones. Because it feels off and unnatural for him to hate her so utterly.

I wasn’t sure about it so to hear this is awesome vindication for keeping it in. Thank you.

I think there were before season 1. It doesn’t make sense for there not to have been moments like this, with how much she wanted a family, how much she loves him.

I also think she was a good mother at a point we don’t see. From what I understand, it was receiving the book he had in season 1 that had him put in therapy; I think she knew what she was doing was bad --- to have him thought crazy --- but it was either that or breaking the curse.

Because it feels off and unnatural for him to hate her so utterly.
It does but he’s also acting like a kid as well; I’ve known children to hate a figure as he does and he has reason. But, I don’t know ... sometimes it feels like he’s being written by folks who don’t understand children or would rather push him to one side so the adults can play.
