Fic: ‘Rory’s greatest achievement.’
Title: Rory’s greatest achievement.
Fandom: Doctor Who.
Rating: (G)
Time Period: After The Angels Take Manhattan.
Summary: Brian needs a cuppa.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

As mentioned for Remembering them, I was going to write some more stories (at least two). I made notes and gave it a little time because I knew the events in The Angels Take Manhattan were fresh and I didn’t want to cry when writing the stories. Stories where Amy and Rory adopted and the child, like in Blink, dropped off a letter from Rory to Brian because I didn’t like the thought of Brian watering the plants eternally and having a chance to say goodbye.

Then the P. S. from Chris Chibnall came --- my stories flesh --- and so, I wrote this, knowing there’d probably be more stories of Anthony from me and I’d probably write a better ending later.

Spoilers are given if not seen the P. S.; Anthony’s initial dialogue from the P. S..

He holds onto the letter tightly and he comes out of the lounge, his eyes upon the man in the hall. Rory’s last words are in his hand and this man, Anthony, was Rory’s greatest achievement. Never mind travelling with the Doctor.

His son had loved, and loved well. His greatest achievement stood before Brian now.

Anthony holds out his hand. “How d’you do?”

Brian sees the lines, sees the whitening grey hair and he knows he can’t shake this other man’s hand. Rory’s letter clutched tightly, he pulls the other man closer, hugs him. Anthony’s startled, he can tell, but he can’t let go. Not just yet.

Finally (only a minute), he does.

“So,” he says, clearing his throat; the letter is pocketed, “y’dad says you have the photo albums.”

A relieved smile creases the older man’s face; he’d not known what to expect, despite following his father’s wishes to the letter and being told how his grandfather would react. “Dad said you’d ask for them.” He gestures over his shoulder; an inherited gesture that makes Brian’s eyes mist. “Shall I fetch them from the car?”

Mutely, Brian nods and Anthony fetches them from the car.

Rory and Amy, he thinks. He can see them in the b—man, for all he’s adopted. He turns, picks up the watering can and looks at the open door once before he walks back to the kitchen. He’d better put on the kettle; Anthony might want a cuppa. God knows he needs one.

I'm not one for 'please make it better' stories; usually no matter how sad stuff makes me; how annoyed I am, I can move past it. But this one; your stories really helped. Poor Brian...

Thank you! I'm always unsure of whether I write Brian at all well; I keep feeling I miss the ,ark with him, somehow.

As for writing more, I'll see how it goes. I can imagine Anthony with children and grandchildren; according to my original notes, he has some.

And I'd like to write more for them, and for Anthony as well on his own.

That little scene made my heart so full it hurt, and this continuation of it was just... so lovely. So lovely.

Thank you. <3
