Fic: ‘goodbye’
Title: goodbye
Fandom: Star Wars
Rating: (PG)
Time Period: Between AotC and RotS.
Summary: Silence shouldn’t lie between them.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

This was supposed to be a funny scene featuring completely different characters; instead, I wrote this. Maybe I should write the beginning of the relationship shown here?

Or what comes after.

On either side of the corridor they stand. People pass between them: Senators, aides, Senate guards and Jedi.

It should not end like this; the knowledge lies unspoken in each heart. But they both knew it would; it should, they know, have never begun. Words should be said; there should be no endless silence between them but this distance is easiest.

And hardest because words bubble up from the stillness, the quiet, within. Unsaid, but there.

Her chin uplifts; her elbow is jostled and she looks to who had done it. When she looks back, he is gone.

“Goodbye.”

An almost silent whisper and she turns to face Captain Typho who has, finally, found her.

Awww, this was a bit sad, but not overly so. It had just the right touch of melancholy and longing. It also left me wanting to know more of what comes before AND after for them. Nicely done! :)

Thank you for such kind words.

It also left me wanting to know more of what comes before AND after for them.
Both!? That just feels plain greedy! But it's also how I feel.

Ha! Yes, but if I was forced to choose? What came after. :)

To be completely honest, I think what came after will come first.

And now, having come full circle, I read this one again with fresh eyes and I have to say that it resonates so much more now, knowing what came before (particularly directly before.) I know I said, above, that I was more interested in what came after, but in highsight? I am now much more taken with this as an ending rather than a beginning. It feels like an ending, bittersweet.

I quite enjoyed the steady progression of this series; it felt natural. I will also never cease to be amazed at how you can come at these characters from such a fresh perspective, even after telling different and alternating aspects of their story before. It struck me that, having written them before, you could have easily fallen into the trap of familiarity, but this still feels fresh and new. :)

It almost makes the after seem like a postscript.

Thank you so very much! I truly wasn’t certain if I had fallen into the familiarity trap or not with this series and I’m glad to know I’ve not done so. Thank you.

I don't generally read a lot of Obi-Wan/Padmé stories, but when the right author handles the pairing, it can be fantastic. This is such a touching, bittersweet scene that really leaves me wanting to know more, as emiv said.

would you like to before and after this scene or do you have a preference between the two?
Mindyarliddian on May 25th, 2012 01:55 am (UTC)
Well, both, because I'm greedy like that. But my preference is definitely for after.

Thanks very much for letting me know!

but when the right author handles the pairing, it can be fantastic.
That's how I feel about this pairing. The right author ... and magic can happen.

Lovely and lyrical (as always). I especially like these lines: And hardest because words bubble up from the stillness, the quiet, within. Unsaid, but there.

xx
